Change of Mind
Lauren and I have decided that we are no longer going to do the Radio Trailer as we don't feel like we are prepared enough for it. I will leave up the research and planning that we have done for the radio trailer and will proceed to carry out research for the magazine review.

Planning the Film Poster
Lauren and I have separated the ancillary tasks between us and whilst Lauren is prepping for the Radio Trailer, I am planning the Film Poster.
I have decided that I would like to have the film poster based around the picture of a dog's eye which shows a blurred image of a girl trying to walk. I feel that it would be most effective to create a post-release poster for the audience we are aiming to target so will be progressing with that very soon.

Change of Mind
Lauren and I have decided that we are going to change our mind on a few things, which I have now gone back and edited to how they will be now:
- We were going to have our film in black and white and then have a colour change when our protagonist meets her guide dog, however we have decided we feel this is too cliché and will therefore have the full film in colour. Hence, I have gone back and edited the planning so that it is relevant to how our film will be now.

Research for Film Poster Analysis
Conventions of a film poster from Charlie Southam
These are two SlideShare's I found to help me with the detailed film poster analysis'. One shows someone's analysis of film posters and the other outlines the codes and conventions of them, making it an easier way to distinguish the technique of analysing such posters and what is expected of them, for when Lauren and I will make out own.

Short Film Poster Research
Today I researched both short film posters and full length film posters in order to decide which I want to annotate for my research stage.
I have decided to annotate a full length film poster as there is more detail and effects given through them, meaning it gives me a greater idea of how to create a professional, industry standard poster for mine and Lauren's film.
I am annotating the poster of 127 HOURS.

Guide Dog Research
I have been researching the process of getting a Guide Dog and found this (link below) as well as lots of other interesting information on the Guide Dogs UK website.
Knowing all of this information is vital to our filming process as it provides us with a larger insight to how to go about the subject and how to make it look realistic.

Ancillary Tasks
As well as filming a short film, we also have to choose two of the following options to do as well:
- A poster for the film
- A radio trailer for the film
- A magazine review page featuring the film
Lauren and I have chosen to do the poster and the radio trailer. This is because we can be more creative in these with both of these options enabling us to create an outstanding project that meets a standard that is as high as we can aim for.
For the poster, as it will on be an awareness poster for the film, we will hopefully be given permission to use the Guide Dog's logo and website. We want to make the poster emotional, yet striking by making it quite artistic. And so we shall run through layout and presentation ideas in order to achieve this criteria.
For the radio trailer we will record someone's voice who can make the short film sound exciting with an informative manner to enable the short film to attract the potential target audience into watching it.

Planning
As a process of our planning we have researched information on blindness from a range of websites, this was to help us gain a wider range of knowledge and understanding about what it is like to be blind.
Another reason of this research was to build the character profile of our main character named 'Jessie.'
This research enables us to give background information into the reasons why she has visual impairment and to help give awareness of younger people with visual impairment.
The main reason we chose to base our story on a young girl who is blind is because stereotypically when you talk about visual impairment you would think of an older person so we have gone against this stereotype in order to help make awareness of the fact that younger people also suffer from these kind of disabilities.

Planning for Short Film
Today Lauren and I have started planning the characters of our short film. We have asked for volunteers who are willing to appear as the main character in our short film.
Two girls have said they are willing to star in the film and we shall be holding auditions for them both in order to cast one of them in the leading role, the other shall appear in the short film with a smaller role.
During the audition we shall print off a dramatic monologue for them both to read and make our decision in preparation to complete the character profiles.

Target Audience
Considering a potential target audience of a short film can take time and plenty of thought/consideration.
Short films contain many sub-genres opening up to very broad audiences however there is a specific audience that short films tend to be aimed at due to the concept short films typically possess.
Short Films are usually made by young adolescents around the age I am (17+) looking to stand out and get their name out in the film industry, therefore the main target audience of this Short film will be young people who are in the same situation I am currently in.
However as the short film Lauren and I are designing will be an awareness video it is argued that the general public with little knowledge about blindness as a disability is a major target audience for this video.

Inspiring Short Film
A short film that has inspired Lauren and I when creating ideas for our short film is Just Ask by 7StreamMedia:
The short film is an awareness film for sensory disabilities and has helped us to understand the feelings of those with these impairments. This will help us when scripting our film.

Today's Lesson - 18/06/15 (Exam Side)
In today's lesson, we were given the following objectives:
Short film: Any film that has a duration longer than one minute and shorter than 15 minutes.
Identifying producers, purpose and audience of a film is easier to do once you establish the genre and what kind of characters and narrative is used within the film. For example, if you have a horror genre of a film and the characters used are all adults with explicit features to narrative and action, you are able to identify that the purpose is to entertain and frighten and the audience is 15+ (depending on how explicit).
Analysis and evaluating a short film to assess its quality is also an aspect I find easy. For example, we analysed:
I felt that Pong was a high quality short film as it was imaginative, difficult to film and original. They used effects of a ping pong ball and a slinky moving, without the effect of being unrealistic, which created a very high quality short film.
Valse was also a brilliant short film (my favourite out of them all) as it had a very original and clever storyline of showing two snails trying to get to each other because they're in love, followed by a long shot of a chef then picking them up and putting them in boiling water, causing a shock factor. This was then continued by showing a shot of them holding onto each other in the water, which I felt was beautifully filmed and executed. The short film also contained perfect music for the feelings given and was very emotionally gripping, once again showing a high quality.
We then watched the music video Foolish, which contained bold colours and a themed storyline, however the actual quality was not great and you lost interest quickly.
Finally we analysed Friday Tigers, which again contained a very effective and gripping storyline, with some expletives and some jump scares, however the film in an entirety was very good quality, with a brilliant plot and filming techniques.
Overall I found today's lesson very useful in establishing what is a quality film and what is not, as well as learning a more in depth understanding as to what a short film is.
- To clarify what is meant by a short film
- To identify producers, purpose and audience for short films
- To analyse and evaluate the quality of a short film

Today's Lesson - 18/06/15
In today's lesson, myself and Lauren have beendiscussing further ideas for our short film. We have still not fully planned and plotted are final ideas, however we are msot of the way there.
Our film is going to be about a girl who has been blind since birth, with the first half of our film showing some background to her life. This part will be in black and white to signify how colourless and lonely her life is without having anybody to properly help her and always be with her. This will then sontiune with more plot that we have to discuss, but will result in the girl being given a guide dog. In the scene where they meet for the first time, the film whil change from black and white to colour as they greet each other for the first time, showing that the girl finally feels complete with a companion.
In order to gain a clearer understanding, we have spoken to our teacher about this idea and she has suggested a few films we can look at to include in our research, including:
This will enhance mine and Lauren's understanding on how to effectively carry out a short film with this editing effect.
In today's lesson I also watched "Boy", a short film by Lucas Helth Postma, which is a very emotional and powerful film which I will continue to analyse as part of my research and planning.
Next Lesson: Continue research and planning

Working with Lauren
Lauren and I have decided to team up and work together for the whole of our research, planning, filming, analysis and evaluation processes.
We felt that this would be a more effective way to work, rather than individually as it would aid us with producing more ideas.

Research and Planning Introduction
Our research and Planning Task is to research the codes and conventions of short films, focusing on the following:
As a suggestion for this as to what to look for, we watched a short film called 'The Crush' in our lesson today and this has helped me to comprehend what my short film needs to look like.
- At least 2 short films in detail, thinking about the genre chosen. Annotate these in full - using micro and macro analysis.
- Another 2/3 short films in less detail, again using micro and macro analysis.

Introducing my A2 Portfolio
This year in Media our main task is to produce a short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes. It may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with one of the following:
I will be working with Lauren Cook to do this and we have an idea of basing the film around a girl who is blind receiving a guide dog, but we are unsure of the entire narrative at this point.
Our first task however is to do Research and Planning, which I will explain more in my next blog post.
- A poster for the film
- A radio trailer for the film
- A film magazine review page featuring the film
